Context

The Maldives is a Muslim country, and local islands are home to Maldivian communities. These rules apply on inhabited islands. Resorts are different.

The key rules

  • Swimwear: wear bikinis and swimwear only on designated tourist beaches ("bikini beaches") and on excursions.
  • Dress: in the village, cover your shoulders and knees. Men shouldn't go shirtless.
  • Alcohol: alcohol isn't sold on local islands, and you can't bring it into the country. Some visitors take a day trip to a resort or a licensed liveaboard boat for a drink.
  • Pork isn't served on local islands.
  • Fridays: businesses close around midday prayers, and many public ferries don't run.
  • Ramadan: eat and drink discreetly in public during the day.
  • Drones: you may need a permit. Check before you fly one.
